I've made a post at my place about what it would take to have a Network of Our Own.

TLDR: I think it could be done, but it would involve:
  • setting up a new non-profit organization
  • running a Kickstarter
  • full-time staff as well as volunteers
  • around $5M/year.

I encourage you to go over there to read the details, but have the discussion *here*, to be more public and accessible.

I think the biggest problem is I don't think fans can generate anywhere near 5m in revenue ethically.

I'm wondering if you've been following the discussions about federated systems? Hubzilla looks like it already has a lot of the basic features fandom needs and wants, and if we can set up a lot of interconnected fan-run servers it would be a lot more workable, and enable a more natural, organic growth, than what you're talking about. I talked a bit about it here!

The thing that sets Hubzilla ahead of the rest of the fediverse like Mastodon et alia is that it has something called "nomadic identity," which means users aren't bound to a single hub or instance. They can register simultaneously at multiple servers, so if one or more go down, they'll still be able to continue on the others. This means servers don't have to be huge or last indefinitely, putting them well within individual fan capability, or small pooled-resources type arrangements.

There's definitely still a place for permanent archives like AO3 and Fanlore, but Hubzilla has image hosting and fine-grained privacy controls built into it already.

I freely admit that I don't understand the fediverse very well, & this may not be the best place for this, but my primary concern is the possibility of losing the entire history of my social media on a platform/server if a server goes down unexpectedly. With Hubzilla's nomadic identity, if a server goes away do you still lose everything you had on that server?

ETA: obviously this is a vulnerability of the web in general, but some websites are clearly better set up to preserve information long-term than others.

People who have emailed me re: scoping have estimated anywhere from $1-2mm in start-up costs. I assume this meant designing the code from scratch, but it doesn't seem unreasonable to me.

I was exploring different models besides non-profit, because if NOOO (I like this abbreviation because it's silly) is to sustain itself, it needs to be able to make profit as opposed to rely on donations. A head of a nonprofit organization is also restricted to certain actions (for good reason, but limiting). I thought about a B corp, but it still didn't seem right because profit is still the organization's primary motive.

Somebody in the community (or possibly on greywash's journal before the comm was formed) suggested looking into co-ops, and tbh I feel like that fits best. Payouts to members are capped at a certain percentage so that money gets reinvested into the organization. Spitballing, I imagine membership payouts would be done as paid accounts (but free accounts are also offered).

Obviously there are no concrete plans at the moment, but a features list has been compiled as well as a list of policy/TOS considerations.

I used to be a project manager - very different field, but the basics are still the basics. I can give it a real once over and see if I can come up with some ideas, maybe?

Belated thanks for posting your offer of help. I'm talking with the others right now about how/where we're capturing volunteers, but I want you to know that your offer is noted.
